What goes into a whole-home audio system
A whole-home (multi-room) audio system plays music in several rooms – the same song everywhere or different sources in each zone – controlled from a phone app or wall keypads. Every system has four parts: speakers (usually in-ceiling or in-wall), amplification, streaming sources and wiring, plus installation. ZoneCost estimates each part so you can compare approaches before getting quotes.
Three ways to power the speakers
- Streaming amplifier per zone: one compact amp with a built-in streamer in each room or in a central closet. Easy to add zones one by one and works with popular multi-room apps.
- Multi-zone amplifier + streamers: a single rack-mounted amplifier with 6 – 12 channels and separate streamers. Neat and cost-effective for many zones, with all cables running to one location.
- Wireless powered speakers: each speaker has its own amplifier and Wi-Fi. No cable runs, but you need outlets, and the choice of architectural speakers is limited.
Typical costs
| Item | Typical price |
| In-ceiling speakers, pair | $150 – $300 budget · $300 – $600 mid · $800 – $2,000 premium |
| Streaming amplifier per zone | $450 – $900 |
| Multi-zone amplifier (6 – 12 zones) | $1,200 – $4,000 + streamers |
| Outdoor speakers, pair | $250 – $800 (landscape systems $1,500+) |
| CL3 speaker cable | $0.40 – $0.80 per ft |
| Installation per speaker | $100 – $200 new construction · $200 – $350 retrofit |
Planning speakers per room
A pair of 6.5" in-ceiling speakers covers a typical bedroom, kitchen or office up to about 250 sq ft. Large living rooms and open-plan spaces benefit from two pairs, and long rooms from speakers spaced along their length. Stereo-input single speakers (one speaker with two tweeters) work well in bathrooms, hallways and small rooms. For music with real bass in the main living area, add an in-wall or compact subwoofer.
New construction vs retrofit
Pre-wiring during construction or a major renovation is by far the cheapest approach: runs are fast while walls are open, and you can add speaker locations later at little cost. Retrofitting a finished home means fishing cable through walls and ceilings, cutting access holes and patching – labor can double. Attics and basements make retrofits easier.
Tips before you buy
- Choose one ecosystem for streaming so every zone works from the same app.
- Make sure the amplifier delivers at least 40 – 60 W per channel into your speakers' impedance.
- Plan the equipment location with ventilation, network and power.
- Use paintable grilles and thin-bezel speakers for a clean look.
- Keep a wiring map – labeled cables save hours when you add or change zones later.
Frequently asked questions
How much does whole-home audio cost?
Roughly $500 – $1,500 per zone including speakers, amplification and professional installation, more for premium speakers or retrofit work.
How many speakers do I need per room?
One pair of in-ceiling speakers for rooms up to about 250 sq ft; two pairs for large living rooms or open spaces.
Is wireless multi-room audio as good as wired?
For most people, yes. Wired architectural speakers look cleaner and offer more choice, while wireless speakers are simpler to install.
What speaker wire do I need for in-ceiling speakers?
CL3-rated 16/2 or 14/2 cable for most runs; 14/4 lets you run a stereo pair through one cable.
Can I install whole-house audio myself?
Yes, if you are comfortable cutting ceiling holes and running cable. Pre-wiring during construction is the easiest DIY scenario.
About ZoneCost
ZoneCost is an independent, free budgeting calculator for multi-room and whole-house audio systems. Prices are typical US market ranges and will vary with brand, region and installer. We are not an installer, dealer or manufacturer.
Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.
The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
